A place to celebrate.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional quality of Ballarat’s urban built form, Lyons Place has been designed by Chamberlain Architects to make its own architectural statement as a new inner-city landmark.
The extraordinary craft and detail in the brickwork of the older buildings in the central Ballarat streetscapes was immediately apparent to Glen Chamberlain from Chamberlain Architects. Motivated by the finer grain of these heritage buildings, Lyons Place seeks to reinstate this built form texture to a long-time vacant section of Lyons Street North.
DESIGNED FOR BALLARAT
Fostering an authentic connection to place, the influences of historic architecture are tangible across the façade of Lyons Place. At the lower level, the three-storey brick podium acts a veil in front of the precast concrete elements beyond. The layering of materials in this way creates a detailed visual language akin to the detail of the heritage buildings within central Ballarat.
CONSIDERED MATERIALITY
Lyons Place embraces a contemporary palette of materials with the textural patterning of brickwork and taller concrete elements working together to visually emulate surrounding heritage built form. The materiality has also been chosen to stand the test of time.
“Materials have been chosen specifically for their ability to age gracefully. Brick and concrete are predominant in the Lyons Place design and they are both materials that develop beautiful patinas with age”.
— Glen Chamberlain, Architect.
THOUGHTFUL LANDSCAPING
To connect Lyons Place to the established trees in Lyons Street North, a mix of European planting along the street interface and Indigenous planting within the central courtyard is planned. Landscaping within balconies and terraces utilising planters and pergolas will provide a layer of greenery to Lyons Place.
“We saw the inclusion of the café within the existing red brick heritage building as an opportunity to provide residents and the local neighbours the ability to experience the building, something that would be lost if it was another residence’”.
— Glen Chamberlain, Architect.
DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE
Lyons Place has been designed to encourage a strong sense of community with generous and inviting shared spaces. The garden courtyard is the centrepiece of Lyons Place offering residents a place to congregate and enjoy. Featuring Indigenous planting, the central space also serves as a generous front garden for Lyons Place. The café within the heritage building provides residents and the local neighbourhood with a new space to connect.
Designed for the future.
Quality design is inherently sustainable. Using high-quality and durable materials, combined with considered design decisions – Lyons Place will stand the test of time. Enabling future residents to live more sustainably without reliance on fossil fuels and by integrating renewable energy, means Lyons Place can be built to meet the needs of the present without compromising future generations.
Carbon-neutral community.
Supporting a more sustainable lifestyle, Lyons Place will enable carbon-neutral living. Electricity will be the only energy source at Lyons Place, with no gas available. Power to Lyons Place will be sourced from renewable off-site generation, rooftop solar and/or 100% certified Greenpower suppliers. The elimination of gas as an energy source ensures residents can achieve a lighter environmental footprint.
Energy efficient homes.
All homes have been designed to achieve an average 7-star NatHERs* rating, including double glazing to all windows and highly efficient fittings and fixtures. This will allow future residents to have peace of mind about the energy performance of their homes, with reduced ongoing running costs. The use of high-quality materials will also keep homes at an optimal temperature and reduce background noise.
*The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme is a means to determine the energy efficiency of a residence or building based on its design.
Reduced car dependence.
Lyons Place features bike friendly access and storage in the hope to reduce dependence on cars. Some apartments will also be sold without a car space. With a Walk Score* of 87 out of 100, Lyons Place is considered Very Walkable, with convenient walkable access to daily amenities and connections to public transport.

Electric Charging Facilities.
Responding to a shift towards electric vehicles, conduits for future provision of electric car charging will be installed to each car space within the basement.
Considered construction measures.
A considered use of all building materials at Lyons Place will include avoiding use of PVC (or where necessary, the use of PVC fitting the guidelines of the Green Building Council of Australia), use of ultra-low VOC paints and use of either re-used or certified timbers. Key builder criteria will include the diversion and sorting of all construction waste away from landfill.
